What causes matting to move?
- Light weight – size, edging and especially the backing will all contribute to the weight.
- Dirt underneath – Especially smaller sizes; you have to clear sand and grit from underneath.
- Substrate – matting needs a hard flat surface to sit on. You can use adhesives or underpad.
Why do all the edges fall off when I roll up the mats for storage or cleaning?
Non-vinyl backed matting often has this problem.

What colour is best in matting?
Dark and multi-toned is best. Black with a white thread is the favorite but others like brown or taupe are good too. Just make sure it is a little heathered or multi-toned. Property managers often opt for grey, blue or red since they are brighter but they don’t hide soil as well.

Which is better? Printed logos or inlaid?
No doubt inlaid logos are better. Printed mats tend to blur as the pile distorts over time especially since they are often done on cut pile wiper mats. Inlaid logos cannot blur or distort since the logo is done with a different carpet that the mat itself.

I don’t have staff to clean mats why not just rent the mats?
Agreed, but up until recently rentals were expensive, floppy, trip hazards and require long term contracts. Now, we rent mats that lay flat without long term contracts. So, if you’re short staffed and it’s too expensive to call cleaners in every month you should rent.
Why are so many mats made with polypropylene when we have know for years that nylon is the preferable fibre?
Nylons are more resilient but unless combined with a poly fibre they are often not very aggressive. Some companies such as 3M have for many years offered the ideal mix of nylon and polypropylene.
